Avert Active Shooter Response Training

Course Description

Avert goes beyond traditional active shooter training to also include bleeding control. Realistic scenarios teach how to recognize signs of danger and react in life-saving ways. Active shooter training can significantly increase survivability by equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively during an incident. While training can improve survivability, it’s important to remember that the effectiveness can vary based on factors like the nature of the incident, the environment, and individual preparedness. Regular drills and updated training are essential for maintaining readiness.

Course Objectives

Key benefits of such training include:

  1. Awareness: Training raises awareness of potential threats and how to recognize warning signs.
  2. Response Strategies: It teaches participants practical response strategies, such as the “Run, Hide, Fight” approach, which can enhance decision-making under stress.
  3. Situational Awareness: Training improves situational awareness, helping individuals assess their surroundings and make informed choices.
  4. Coordination: Organizations that conduct regular training can foster better coordination among employees and emergency responders.
  5. Reduced Panic: Familiarity with procedures can reduce panic and confusion during an actual event, allowing for more effective responses.

Intended Audience

  • Schools
  • Event venues
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Public businesses
  • Government agencies
  • General public
  • Faith communities

Since 2014 about 30% of active shooter incidents occurred in workplaces. Yet active shooter incidents can happen anywhere. Because anyone can be involved in an incident, everyone should be trained how to survive.

Course Outline

The AVERT course is delivered in a “blended” training format. This means students will first receive online training introducing them to the subject and preparing them for the instructor-led session.

The instructor-led session lasts approximately three hours and includes hands-on training, realistic drills, and education with encouraging tips and feedback. Class sizes are limited to 15 people or less per instructor. All participants have an opportunity to practice and gain the confidence to respond appropriately if an active violence or life-threatening situation arises.

Authorized AVERT instructors use orange replica weapons to discuss the types of weapons most commonly used in violent situations. The replicas are also used to demonstrate how to disarm an attacker if other alternatives, such as evading and escaping, are not possible.
